Mathare United bounced back from their opening-day loss to Posta Rangers with a hard-fought 1-0 win over KCB FC in an exciting FKF Premier League match on Friday afternoon.

Captain Elli Asieche was the hero once again for Mathare, scoring his second goal of the season with a brilliant free-kick in the 43rd minute at a rain-soaked ground.

The game started at a very fast pace, with both teams creating early chances. In the seventh minute, Asieche missed Mathare’s first big opportunity when he shot wide from Paul Kinyanjui’s cross. KCB responded straight away, but Kelvin Etemesi fired over after linking up with Boniface Omondi.

Midfield battles became intense as Jack Ong’anya stood out for KCB while Junior Nyawir controlled the play for Mathare. The breakthrough came just before half-time when Herit Mungai was fouled at the edge of the box. Asieche stepped up and curled a fine free-kick past Boniface Munyasa to give Mathare the lead.

KCB pushed hard in the second half looking for an equaliser. In the 50th minute, Clyde Senaji forced a stunning save from goalkeeper Kevin Ouru, who tipped his powerful shot onto the post. Etemesi also came close just before the hour mark, narrowly missing a tap-in from Mungai’s cross.

Mathare coach John Kamau brought on Dennis Okoth to stretch KCB’s defence, and the substitute almost doubled the lead with a strong header from another Asieche set-piece.

Late drama followed when Ouru was carried off injured, with veteran Robert Mboya taking over in goal. Despite ten minutes of added time, Mathare’s makeshift defence held firm to withstand KCB’s heavy pressure.

The win lifts Mathare to fifth place in the table after two matches. KCB, who started the season with a big win over Tusker, suffered their first defeat under coach Robert Matano but stay second in the standings.
